Kia`imakani

Chief Kiaimakani was a respected and influential leader on the island of Kauai. He was known for his powerful oli (chant) "I Kū mau mau," which inspired warriors as they were trying to save the sinking ship “Ha`aheo o Hawai`i”. Despite being blind, Kiaimakani was highly respected and was able to use his influence to advocate for the rights of his people. He opposed the distribution of Kauai's lands to outsiders and instead wanted them to remain in the hands of Kauai's native people. In 1824 he was against anyone from other islands receiving lands being divided by Kalanimoku representative of Liholiho, Kia'imakani's leadership and dedication to his community earned him the admiration and loyalty of those around him.
